latimes.com — Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died today in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, an aide said. He was 90.

  10. So many of my favourite authors (Stephen Baxter, Alastair Reynolds, and Charles Stross, among others) have cited him as an inspiration. The Songs of Distant Earth is one of my very favourite novels.
