Favorable TechCrunch article about Mixx gets buried at Digg; follow-up story praising Digg hits their front page view story

digg.com — Interesting turn of events, to say the least. The link above goes directly to the Digg page. The review in question comes across with some valid points; though many, in my mind, are debatable ones I disagree with.

1. Yeah I saw this today. In fact I think Mixx got a lil dugg from it too.

2. Couple of points I wanted to add:
1. Props to Tamar for making some great solid comments on the Digg page - much respect!
2. This article went FP earlier today when Mixx was dealing with some server issues, I believe - so there are some asshats in there who believe Mixx actually suffered from "the Digg Effect".

3. Are we really that surprised? Digg fanboys censor anything that is anti-Digg. You can't submit a story about Reddit, StumbleUpon, Propeller, or any social network on Digg. They don't want to hear about it.

I'm glad, though, that my comment is one of the most-voted-up comments. Apparently people agree with what I have to say, which gives a lot more credibility to Mixx. :)

4. So are we Mixx fanboys (and girls) then? I always wanted to be a fanboy.

5. I'm really not surprised. The same thing happens here. Mixx rocks goes up. Digg sucks goes up. The same principal holds true for other sites

6. Honestly, I dig (no pun intended) what Mixx adds to the social news mix (pun intended), but stories like this that attack by comparing Mixx to the competition puts Mixx in a position of weakness. Mixx'ers should focus on the strengths of the site that makes Mixx a unique experience. Pictures, groups, tagged content, and the general camaraderie amongst the Mixx'ers. That's what makes Mixx special.

Agreed. Yet, for some of us, it's a little hard to let go of some "bitter" and "bad" feelings about the Digg overlords. There appear to be a lot of issues and strangeness going on over there; and a lot of people feel somewhat safer venting and bitching about it over here or in The Mixxing Bowl.

8. I wrote a fair article about the interaction and community of both social websites that's worth a read here http://www.mixx.com/stories/16239/the-growth-of-a-community-digg-vs-mixx-

9. It makes sense that people entrust their loyalty to the sites they waste the most of their time on, however, it really is a bummer. All sides of the good and bad of all sites should be allowed. The sites should be allowed to live on in their own right, meaning, let the users vote it up or down and get rid of any censoring from moderators and admins.

One thing I do not see at Mixx yet is the outright banning of submissions by moderators. This is a major problem on Digg. Digg gets to pretend it's because people are burying the submission. While this may be true, when something has 1,000 diggs 20 buries should not logically remove a submission from public view.

I hope Mixx learns from Digg's mistakes. I don't see the article as an attack at all as MrBabyMan (although I definitely appreciate MrBabyMan's input). While at this time it's easy to discount Mixx as a place to find community and extras that are not found at Digg, I see Mixx as a clear competitor and anyone who's paying attention to the traffic metrics, it's obvious there is a movement in the works.

10. I tried to comment on this on Digg but I am suddenly unable to leave comments on any article on Digg.

The reason why Mixx is better than Digg is because it lacks the cult of personality of Kevin Rose. Anything negative about digg or Kevin brands the submitter (or site) as a spammer. Digg is not about social news it is about Kevin Rose and Diggnation. It's a classic cult situation.

Kevin's glass house can not stand a single pebble being thrown at it.

11. Not to be rude, but I don't really want to read a social news site that talks about itself all the time. If we keep comparing ourselves to the competition like Digg, then we're no better than Digg's stories on how they're "eating up" Slashdot. I want to be at MIxx because it's a friendly and intelligent community. Egotistical stories need not apply. :) <3 Mixx.

12. I think that there will always be a bit of rivalry between users of the two sites, but I do hope that in time that can become a friendly rivalry. For that to happen though the Digg fanboy's (yes we are Mixx fanboy's & Girls)and overlords need to stop acting like they are so threatened by Mixx. Stop baning people for comments and submissions just because they mention the other site. Mixx doesn't do that when we mention Digg.

13. That's how I heard about this site.

14. i'm over digg, they are buried!

i just don't feel that it operates in a fair and democratic manner, and also the vibe is pretty sour. somehow i think that VC money probably brought with it some bad karma, and it's probably going to be sold (to Microsoft i'm thinking) or even worse.

some of the people there really deserve and/or are asking to be rolled up into DiggBS or ABCDigg or perhaps DiggBC, if you get my drift. and i think they will like that too.

i don't see this kind of platform as a place to censor, but then again, it's not a place to use blatant personal attacks and personal aggrandizement, either. hopefully a balance can be found, hopefully people will have the wisedom to separate passion from idiocy....ya'know?

perhaps in time, a council of elders can arise that will be the equivalent of a House of Representatives, and Mixx can be a republic of peace based on compassion as well as even-handedness and inclusiveness. perhaps something like "time outs" could be created, as parents do with unruly kids that hurt others....

there is hope here, from the ashes of the first 12 years of the Web, to create something truly offering hope for humanity. without doubt digg and others have made a good step, but we must learn from the pioneers.

for starters, i challenge the developers here to put their source code online for all to see, and explain carefully the "rules" that this site truly operates under.

thanks for reading this.
love,
yoda

15. oh, one more thing, and don't hate me for this! ;)

too late now, but the name Mixx certainly does seem a bit reactionary to Digg!

reminds me of Satanists, who basically are reactionary anti-Catholics, using a key element of the latter, thereby....well you see what i mean, right? (ok that's a jump, but it just came to mind...) lmao...oh well off to get some sleep.

let me say that i am excited by Mixx, having just, um, stumbled upon it, yesterday, thanks to Digg...the way one could find Satan through Catholicism...hmmm..maybe that wasn't a jump after all.

peace ya'll. ...and good night.

16. Am I still active on Digg? Yes, however, I no longer really submit to Digg. 98% of my submissions are on Mixx. I go over to Digg to Digg stories my friends have submitted and support them, but I find Mixx to be a better place.
It seems on Digg that if you are not an Apple Fanboy, or an Atheist, 70% of your submissions will be buried. I find Digg to be more open minded and Democratic as Yoda mentioned.

17. @cGt2099
Greg, the only "Digg effect" I have seen on Mixx is top Diggers coming to join the community. ;-)

18. @cGt2099 i wasn't on there long but definitely managed to get a build up of those feelings you speak of. i have written asking for my account to be completely removed, and if that doesn't work, i'm gonna get myself banned for life (which sounds fun anyhow!) by posting links to pr0n, REAL stuff, not that wedding thing...my god are they f'in lame.

i want you to know, that i mentioned you in my letter as a primary reason for my jumping ship and asked for it to be forwarded to Jay and Kevin (i guess it was). i hope you aren't mad about this, but, dude, they should send you a gold watch at least.

they will get theres, they are Powerslaves (a la the Iron Maiden album which, if you haven't heard it, you should). even us "little people" have feelings and i feel bad for you and everyone else they trod upon, including me!

you should really cancel your account, not give them the time of day. but i understand you don't want to abandon your friends and fans...must be a hard call.

take care and enjoy the Yule and/or Solstice. peace. yoda.
