  1. This is very interesting and it makes me think of how computer hackers were actually considered good guys years ago because they helped make computer systems better.

  2. The comments in this article are worth the read alone. I personally find that if you don't generate links, you don't get traffic. The whole content is king is great, but if you write content in a vacuum, your traffic is limited.

  3. Content has not been King since 2001. LOL seriously with no links you get no rank and with no rank you get no traffic. There are two types of successful SEOs.

    1. Honest about building links

    2. Lies about building links

That is it and it alone. You can't successfully rank pages today with out making link building a component of what you do. It is like saying you can make numbers add up with out using numbers. The algo is built that way.

Oh and Jim you are dead on. The whole term "Black Hat" is actually a hacker term long before the days of SEO. Black Hats were elite hackers that did exactly what you say, made systems better by identifying hackable parts and proving it could be done. In many ways that is exactly what real Black Hat SEOs have done. Black Hat and Spam are not one in the same.

  4. hackers are the most important people in the world..they show large organizations the weakness in their systems in a (usually) benign way, before they can be exploited.

people like Kevin (Mitnick, of course) are in HIGH demand in the world of computer security..that guy could make millions and probably does.

  5. this is why Linux is so much safer than Windows, as an example.

Windows is done behind closed doors, by maybe a couple thousand scientist/engineers.

Linux' kernel has been examined by millions (a lot anyhow) and you can go look at it right this minute. therefore, there are very few unknown exploits left.

Open Source will always be better, for this reason.

that, and do you really trust Redmond that much? they are not trustworthy...do a process explore on your XP box and note the weird M$ shit that is running in the background that you don't know about.....go ahead, do it. you WILL NOT like it.

    you won't.

  7. @Syxle,

If you read the source article you may find that that is just not the truth.

  8. @Yoda,

No way man I don't trust Redmond at all! You are dead on about open source systems being safer. Conventional wisdom would make one think the opposite is true but for the very reason you point out open systems are generally both safer and more stable.

Comments like Syxle made are exactly why I wrote the original article by the way. The reality is SERPs work much the same way. It is the testing and probing by SEOs that improve them and make them better. No SEO spends very much time ranking poor quality content, thats a great way to go out of business.
