Restore democracy! A powerful media needs to be as transparent as possible. The only way we can achieve the best social media is by being open, by following the principles of a democracy and by embracing the community.

  3. Remember that Web 2.0 is not about democracy and altruism but about making profits off user generated content. If you want democratic media join your local IMC.

  4. @onreact.com No, web 2.0 is not all about money. Web 2.0 is about user participation. Anyways, why can't we have democratic media if no company owns the media, as I said in the article?

  5. This is an interesting idea. The one problem with allowing the users pick the features is that the application/site may end up trying to be "all things to all people", but really be "not enough for most people".

  6. @robdiana, thanks for raising that possibility. It is a very real problem. One solution would be to allow for customization. Not just regular customization but to allow for some core features that are wanted by the majority (so most people get what they want) to be defaults. If a minority wants some feature and it is implemented, then, they will have to turn it on themselves. So, on the whole, both the majority and minority get what they want.

But in this post itself, I haven't talked about the implementation problems much as it would make the post way too long. I was only wondering if people think this is a good idea.

Btw, robdiana, I noticed you are a developer, would you be interested in helping in such an effort? (Arghh, I dunno how to talk directly to people on mixx, is there a way? otherwise, email me with ur contacts)

I think if you "share a link" with me, you can provide a comment with your email and we can then have a conversation offline through email.
