SEOmoz | Sexism Runs Rampant on Reddit (and maybe the rest of the social web)

seomoz.org — "Reddit is not for me. It's sexist and hateful. It's becoming more and more apparent each day – from the photo montage of Russian school girls that makes the front page, to the commentors who feel that the word “cunt” is an acceptable term for a wom

  1. This is EXACTLY the reason why I left digg. The sexist comments there are too many to count. MrBabyMan pointed out that it's just a small, vocal minority (so probably not the fault of the entire site) but it was enough for me to feel totally unwelcome there.

Here at mixx, I feel so much more welcome. I'm hyper-sensitive to sexist comments, and it does happen every once in a while, but not NEARLY as often as it does at digg, or apparently reddit. Also, the comments which are most offensive usually get reported and removed. That never happened at digg.

  2. @calinazaret it's a man's world, but not really because we rule.

  3. I agree that women are treated poorly on sites like digg at times, but a few of the examples in the article aren't really sexist as much as just cruel and offensive. I would garner to say 50% or more of comments on digg attack, make fun of or intend to offend people, regardless of sex.

  4. Also, her examples are not actually the worst I've seen or experienced. I think this is officially the worst:

my comment is the third one, currently at -46 diggs, username: calinazaret.

The entire discussion is retarded. It's just one anti-woman comment after another, and the few brave men who are bold enough to defend me get buried and insulted themselves.

  5. @flap not everyone on digg is sexist, but it DOES happen. If you need proof, see above comment and thread on digg.

  6. Julie rules over a social media podcast, so I'm shocked she would let any guy get the best of her. She's ruthless on Saturday Night Monkey. :D

I totally agree, digg can be horrible. The point is that people love to be little shits on the internet because they can do so without having to think about it or deal with the reactions of a real person. I am not in any way defending these people, I'm just saying that the hate is spread further than simply sexism and I didn't really enjoy the article.

I think you should also take some (not all) of the comments with a grain of salt. Probably half the people who dugg your comment down did so because they thought the comment after was funny, not because they hate you or feminists.

  8. What's funny is that at the Digg parties that they do, there is a pretty decent female population. Imagine trying to go to one of those to pick up a "cunt" only to discover the cutie you're chatting up just remembered you spewed forth some sexist and hateful comment towards her or someone else.

  9. I am really pleased to see the reception here has been a lot better than elsewhere (I wrote the post). The whole thing felt like an exercise in futility. If people honestly think that sort of behavior is okay, there's nothing I can really do to stop it. With regards to the examples, interestingly, there were a lot of better ones, but every time I tried to link to a comment the author would delete it. It was kind of absurd. Anyway, I'm glad to see there a others who are bothered by this, too - it's nice to know I'm not alone.

  10. @mysteryguest Thank you for increasing awareness of sexism on the Internet! It's really a great article and it is very well-written. It's true, people who engage in such ignorant behavior are not going to change their ways unless they have a rude awakening of some sort.

  11. @SallyD - thank you so much for your support - I'm really glad I'm not alone in feeling this way.

  12. Though I agree, I'd also like to point out that I've had this discussion with Reddit users who agreed that it was a problem. I think it's a subset of Reddit users, although a very vocal and perhaps popular one. As a woman on reddit, I do find myself making plenty of comments against this kind of behavior.

  13. There is sexism everywhere, there will always be bad people. I love Mixx due to its clean feel, I have yet to encounter it here, and sincerely hope I never will..
