rsspieces.com — So, here is a beautiful little story about a company, ePerks, that didn't quite like what one blogger did, so they attacked him personally all over the Internet and then sued him when he started talking about it.

  1. This was a low down dirty move. Totally unprofessional. Do they not realize Bloggers know quite a bit about the internet? ePerks, this was a shitty and unprofessional; move.

  3. Well, it's highly likely that someone from ePerks in spamming the comment boards, but I'm going to make a quick point about San Jose and the rest of "silicon valley." In Sunnyvale (just north of San Jose) the corporate offices for Yahoo and Google are literally about five miles apart from each other, and those five miles are filled with other businesses. It's one of the most wired places in the world. Walking around downtown every other person has an iPhone or a crackberry and they're checking their email on their phone while they answer calls with their bluetooth headset.

It's HIGLY unlikely, but actually possible, that all those people in favor of ePerks are just random people in San Jose.

  4. @calinazaret you are totally right to question the theoretical side - it is possible that the IPs in some way are fake as well, that someone was deliberately in some way trying to frame ePerks for something as far back as July 2007 when comments first started to appear en-mass using that IP address.

On Topix there is a similar thread - just a few comments from that range on the first page, but look at what happens on the second page, almost wall to wall Brentwood CA, but all different dates.

This is a company meant to be selling exclusive ZIP codes, yet all their happy customers use the same IP address.

However it is not just forum posts

Full email conversations have been tied to that IP address block over a number of days
    Blog comments on multiple blogs.

    S. Jaffar's email headers when replying to Vlad's email telling him he is banned
    S. Jaffar as the name that appears on the Yahoo answers accusation

Then there are the fake blogs with 20+ comments, all positive, with only a couple of people leaving URLs - these are supposedly from real estate agents promoting online - that kind of reader almost always leaves a URL even on unrelated blogs.

  5. @AndyBeard Even without knowing the details you just gave I assumed it was most likely ePerks in the comments. I'm just one of those people who thinks nothing is ever totally sure. In other words, I'd make a really crappy juror.
