Brian is right about the changes. We have 4 "not available" screens. The first is the babies & lemons don't mixx. When you see one of those, we have a bug in our code and would LOVE for you to report that to us at feedback@ The second, the baby napping is there when we have to bring mixx down for maintenance. The napping baby is usally a short down time, but sometimes can involve things like database migrations, etc that take a little bit longer. We try to do these at like 4am ET, so most mixxers are not inconvenienced. The thing to know when you see the napping baby, that when Mixx comes back there are no new features, etc.
The 3rd down screen you may never see, but its if someone comes to us with an ancient browser. We show them somewhere they can get new, more updated browsers.

Finally, the baby in the tuxedo means we're doing a new code install. This will come at seemingly random times as each new feature will take different amount of engineering and testing times, but we generally shoot to do these on Thursday afternoons or Friday mornings, if at all possible. This baby tux page points to our blog where we talk about the changes that we are putting in so that Mixxers at least know what to look for or expect when Mixx comes back. Our average new code install takes between 10-20 mins of downtime.

We designed groups like that for a reason. What if Mixx were innundated with tons of Paris Hilton fans? ( I was going to say Britney but I don't need Chris Crocker or Jay Fowler all over me ;-D), who made a gargantuan 50,000 member group and used that as a mechanism to get any Paris Hilton news to the front page of popular and nothing else had enough movement/votes to get there. We'd get complaints from everyone that one large group was dominating the Popular section of the site

Instead, Paris Hilton fans are in their own section, with their own popular board, discussion threads, etc.

Its why we designed it the way we did. Its a birds of a feather type of thing as opposed to a mechanism to get something to Popular type of thing.

Will they pick a freakin time to implement most of the changes? I've had several times when I try to submit a story and I get that weird "We're mixxing" thing and then I find something new O.O Or maybe it's just my imagination.....anyway it gets annoying to run into that screen, but hey hey, we'z beta

Well depends on which screen you're getting. If you're getting "Lemons and Babies" then that means there was an error, but you submission may have still gone through depending on where the error occurs.

If you're getting the We're sleeping, then that's another issue. Sometimes they do emergency fixes and I would imagine they can't time those if its critical enough.

As for planned changes, then that's a valid question.

meh. whatever episode it is, whatever errors we might get, it's just nice to feel like someone is listening and that we, as contributors and participants, matter. i know that might sound pretty basic, but i'm a digg refugee and this sort of thing just tickles my fancy.

I had a cool idea earlier today, but I just can't remember it **doh** I'll try to remember it...

However I actually have a question...The functions of groups is somewhat vague, at least to me, as you have noticed I opened a new group called "I use open source, why don't you", but it appears that the votes on stories in the group is different from public, same goes for the comments. Maybe I am getting it wrong, but I thought of groups as big pool where members can submit related stories...and have general discussion on the side.

The way I see it now is just confusing, having two stories to follow and read the comments.

My gripe is still the email that you get when someone friends you that you've already friended. If you are mutual friends, it should be a slightly different email.

And hey, why not have Social Blend on UStream, like TDD guys had done?
