chrisg.com — I have come to a realisation recently that I wanted to check with you. I’m starting to think Reddit has overtaken Digg. It doesn’t look as nice, doesn’t have the big name, nor does it have the famous Kevin Rose, but as a user and as a Social Media t

  1. It seems to me that Reddit’s “problems” are more easily fixed than Digg’s so I’m wondering why Reddit hasn’t. Would it be so expensive to pretty up the site and make it a little easier to use?

  2. Reddit is like Digg a hate driven "community" where even the best content gets anonymously voted down.

  3. all sites have their pros and cons.

i know some people think that reddit has an ugly design. i disagree. it is elegantly simple. minimalist. intuitive. clean. page space has a high content-to-junk ratio. front page content is always high quality.

on the other hand, some reddit features are annoying. digg has a "who dugg this" file you that is critical to successful diggers. reddit does not provide this file.

also, reddits friends feature is not very useful. so far as i can tell, the only thing it does is turns the people you befriends name red. most social networks set friend files to be open-to-the-public. reddit hides them.

as long as i am critiquing design, lets look at mixx. i think there should be an "all" button at the end of the "recently voted" field. having access to the entire "recently voted" file would be very useful.

also, we have 2 friend files. the "mixx friends" and "followers". there should be some sort on indicator on each page showing the status of the relationship. "follows" "following" "mutual"

  4. Reddit used to be clean and minimalist. That was nice. Now it feels cluttered. But that's not even why I stay away.

It feels like cynicism and ultra-liberal views are king. The angrier you are at Bush, the most popular you are on reddit.
