Why should it matter if a soldier befriends a pet. So long as it doesn't interfere with their patrols or duties, I see nothing wrong with it. I feel bad for the dog too....It really is a shame and something should be done.

It's a tricky situation. In space there are so many variables and the astronauts/cosmonauts need to be in top shape and ready should something go wrong. Alcohol could alter their perception and lead to mistakes should someone have a teensie bit too much. Falling off the barstool drunk is one thing, up in space where the smallest mistake could kill everyone...big difference. Remember that right now on the station, there are 3 crewmen, all dependent upon one another. Can you imagine what would've happened during apollo 13 had one of the astronauts been a bit buzzed?

Not to say that I'm completely against it, just a lot more to take into consideration
