Given the global natural of greenhouse gas emissions, if we are able to cut back on our own coal production, only to then increase our export of coal to other nations like India, we will still be moving backwards.

The administrator of the coal plant that supplies steam to the Capitol Building wanted to convert it to a cleaner fuel. However Senators from coal producing states, namely Sen. McConnell (Ken) and Sen. Byrd (WV), vetoed this effort.

For wind energy to be competitive with gas fired plants, natural gas prices must be at least $8 per thousand cubic ft. In July, it was around $13.50, by this week it was below $7.

Europe's environment chief suggested using some of the cash generated by the EU's landmark emissions trading scheme to tackle the loss of forests. Deforestation currently accounts for 20% of greenhouse gas emissions.

The British government declared that it would aim to reduce emissions by 80% by 2050. This is up from the prior goal of a 60%. And the whole European Union agreed to stick to their plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020.
