Good points all... the reprocessing issue is particularly thorny, since plutonium is a byproduct (a point the nuclear industry fails to bring up when they discuss the potential for recycling "waste").

I agree that LEDs are the ultimate answer, but CFLs are an important bridge technology, and the mercury threat is really overstated in this article. We need to inform consumers about safe handling and disposal, but myths about a broken CFL creating "thousands of dollars in clean-up costs" don't stand up to scrutiny...
