If the idea of the ad was to promote South Carolina to European tourists,
describing it as gay is a big mistake for another reason (that is obviously
not known to the involved publicists or even MSNBC)...

In today's English speaking teenagers slang ‘South Carolina is so gay’
actually comes out as ‘South Carolina is so lame’ or ‘South Carolina is
so boring’ or even worst ‘South Carolina is so cr*p’ .... Yikes! :-)

And the posters were plastered all over the London subway?! Double Yikes!

Yes I agree. Like the site says, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Boston, etc were "...so gay" too. It was a campaign series. I wasnt sure at first if the SC one was the only one that said it was so gay since this is the only one that had a lot of backlash. The tagline was meant for shock value. It makes one do a double take and draw someone to the poster to read what its all about. That has worked. But I think this approach was handled wrong. The idea should have been more clever than that. The agency should not have used an idea that could be taking in a negative way.

More about it from the SC blog.
