Parents allow girl to die...and they'd do it again view story

jsonline.com — I believe in the right to practice a religion of your choosing, but there is a line. Here's a heart-breaking story of a young girl who died from diabetes because her parents refused to take her to a doctor. And they still think they did the right thing!

  1. Tragic and sad... I really don't know what else to say. I don't like judging others based on their faith choices in life, but their little girl could have been saved in this incident, literally

I don't normally judge others based on their faith, but that girl has too young to be forced into their belief system at the cost of her life. I respect people's right to practice any faith they like, as long as it doesn't harm others. If you ask me, this was no better than a human sacrifice. They literally sacrificed her life in the name of God. Call it what you will, but this sounds more like the work of the Devil than god.

Oh no, I judge faiths. I just try not to judge the people that have certain faiths. Does that make sense. I mean, I try to respect people's beliefs, even if they aren't my own, but I have loads of things to say about the religions themselves.

  6. This wasn't right at all. The child had no way of knowing what was happening would kill her. How can any faith say that it is ok to let someone die from a treatable disease.

Right on. I'm sickened every time I hear of yet another story about a kid who dies because of the parent's religion.

  8. @Honest_Ape It's tough too because if the parents are gone after legally, every religious fanatic claims persecution due to their religion when all it is really about it warning parents that if they don't take care of their kids they will have to deal with the results.

  9. This isn't faith, this is insanity.

I take my faith very seriously, and I believe God gave the world doctors to treat us. Christians have this weird thing about wanting to cut themselves out of The World, but there's no biblical evidence for that. If anything, the bible tells us to interact with people as much as possible, and be an example of God's love.

There is no excuse for these people.

Amen to that. My wife and I were talking about this last night. In our opinion, these people should consider the idea that doctors are doing the work of God, saving people who would otherwise die. That's just one way they could look at it. Most Christians would think what they did was evil and not honoring God at all.

  11. the American medical system kills plenty...i've read 80,000 people a year die due to mistakes, malpractice, and infections they got at the hospital or via transfusions, etc. that's a lot.

still, every society has healers of some sort. they should have done *something* huh?

it used to be said that Mormons let themselves and their families die like this regularly due to Religious reasons, but i'm not sure if that's still true in 2008. it was until recently, and there are plenty of Mormons..i'm sure many have died because of it.

  12. but when someone truly believes in Heaven, then this is not a necessarily bad thing, is it? isn't Heaven better, and isn't that where these Christians think they will go when they die?

so, if you are a Christian, perhaps you could see this as a blessing...Heaven's gotta beat years in some hospital attached to machines and then dying that way!!

of course, i'm not a Christian, but am I wrong here?

Heaven may beat years in a hospital, but this girl just needed some medicine and a couple dr's visits. And if heaven is so great it's worth dying to get there, why don't the extremist Christians like this family just kill their children to send them early? I mean, what better gift to give your kid than an early ticket to heaven?

If there's a Heaven and Hell, I know these parents are going to the latter. I can't believe in a God who would prefer his followers to let a little girl die, rather than seek treatment. Doctors aren't against God. They are healers. God's surely in favor of that.

What would this couple have the world do? If a kid gets hit by a car, should they just wait with them while they die instead of calling 911. If a girl is shot in a drive-by, should people smile and be thankful she's going to heaven, rather than trying to save the girl?

I never heard it about Mormon's before, but Christian Scientists and Jehovah's Witnesses still refuse medical treatment like in the story posted.
