Why Mixx Hasn't Gotten The Following It Deserves - Yet

searchengineland.com — Mixx, a social media submission site, is a newcomer on the scene, so it understandably will take a while for it to catch up with older sites like Digg, Propeller, Reddit, and StumbleUpon. That said, this article looks at the current state of Mixx and the

  3. This is great, I'm glad to see Mixx getting some traction and being written about by Muhammad on SEL. Great Post , look forward to seeing you here on Mixx as well...

  4. I think it is a great thing that Muhammad wrote such a glowing report about Mixx. I really enjoy coming here to Mixx. The atmosphere is always so comfortable and comments made are conversations between friends.
I hope the social world flock here because we all know that Mu has a great reach and his word carries a big impact.
    Thanks for posting this Andy.

To a degree there's also some fair, yet constructive, criticism there too. How can we, as Mixxers, address some of the points he raises? How can we as users help bring Mixx to the next level, and beyond?

  6. @cGt2099, point well taken and yes how do we take it to the next level as a community. We all know what a great place it is here and the degree of interaction and cooperation is second to none. Thanks for posting it Andy, Mu thanks for the article, something I would suggest be read twice.
There is a definite feeling of being a part of something new and breaking here. Like Mu said, and this after only 6 months. So again, how do we kick it up a notch to increase what we already have here?

  7. @cGt2099
Honestly, what concerns did he have? Most of the article basically said that Mixx just does not have enough readership yet. That and the chicken/egg problem. I thought it was a very fair and balanced review that made Mixx look very good. Granted take everything I say today with a grain of salt. I have been sick all day and could just be delirious :)

  8. I've been a fan of his writing for a while now. Just having that kind of article on Search Engine Land can start to help with the chicken/egg issue.

  9. That was a very fair article about Mixx, and I agree with you "chicken and egg" scenario.

Although, I think something HUGE is missing. In your list of reasons why people use social media, you don't mention "making friends" at all, lol. I think that's a pretty big part of it. Due to the way that mixx is designed, it greatly encourages users to be positive to one another in their interactions. You make this point here:

"comments on Mixx tend to be much better than those on Digg and people try to write down constructive thoughts rather than just trying to be funny and get the comment voted up."

Comments are constructive, I believe, because you can't vote on them. I've made the point before that if mixx implements a voting system for comments it'll be bad news because the quality will go down enormously.

Furthermore, the atmosphere at digg is one of total competition and very little meaningful interaction. I was a digg user for several months and I never made a friend there because everyone was so vicious. People are more likely to form friendships at mixx because the voting system is more transparent.

Anyway, thanks for writing this. Hope to see you around more ^_^

  10. I think Mu did a great job of summarizing the positives and the negatives. Ultimately, Mixx is the community I enjoy the most and have learned to look to them to be the quickest at innovation and the best (or the only at that) to listen to their users.

Mu makes some good points that there are segments of users that might not see that incentive yet with Mixx. There is one very powerful incentive to using Mixx for anyone that owns a blog, website etc. I don't think I'm ready to come out and state this publicly but it's been going on for about a month and a half and it's beating all other social media sites. This reveals to me a long trend of many things to come for Mixx.

That is SO true. Everyone's using the buzz word: SOCIAL MEDIA this, and SOCIAL MEDIA that, so much so, that people are forgetting about the word SOCIAL.

I've said it before and I will say it again; Mixx is putting the Social back into Social Media.

    Mixx FTW

  12. @cGt2099 -- "How can we as users help bring Mixx to the next level, and beyond?"

It seems to me that one reason digg became so popular is that Joe Blogger often wrote about and linked to the cool stuff he found on digg (or reddit or wherever). That had several impacts:

    1. Readers of those blogs/sites were introduced to a new site.
    2. The presence of links encouraged marketers to be more interested in digg (as Mu points out in his article).
    3. These created a snowball effect: an audience grew, which attracted more marketers and content, and the law of supply and demand came into play to create exponential growth.

I have yet to see much of this happening with Mixx. I read a couple hundred blogs on and off, and rarely do I see "Check out this cool video/photo/article I found on mixx." So, neither #1 nor #2 are happening.

So, is this something we Mixxers can help change? Can we write about Mixx more on our own blogs? Can we do other things to help spread the word?

  13. @pleeker

The Social Blend crew has a plan to sort of help #1 and #2 and on a fairly large scale, we just have to wait for a few things. Stay Tuned.

Forgot to add, in the mean time, yes, write what you found on Mixx. I think however, some people are getting tired of hearing point by point why Mixx is great. I think for now people need to start writing stuff like you stated, "Oh wow, I just found this at Mixx, check it out"

  15. I thought that the concluding paragraph was very insightful:
"I believe social news is not a zero sum game. We can learn from Mixx and Mixxers, improve the social news space, and make the entire social news experience much better for our audience."

Social news is absolutely NOT a zero sum game. Ask most people "on the street" where they get their news from and chances are its not from a social media site. Most people have (of course) not heard of Mixx, but even more than that, they haven't ever HEARD of "social media." They have no idea what a social media site is.

However, the entire vertical has the opportunity to really transform the way that people consume their news online, and in turn have an impact on the way that tradition media presents news. The opportunity to expand the audience for all social news sites is huge and one that we're excited to be a part of.

Thanks for the writeup, MSaleem, I think it was a very fair and balanced view of where we are.

And for the new folks who might come here as a result of this, welcome, and know that our mailbox is always open (at feedback_at_mixx)

  19. To have the #1 and #2 happen, we need to submit quality content here. Basically, that's what counts. And yeah, extra mentions and promotions count, too.

Btw, the comment and submission quality can degrade as the amount of users grow. The average of a mass is always lower, than the top. Check out the Sturgeon's Law. So keep that in mind, when you praise it.

However, if we all try to be polite, thoughtful and considerate, we have a chance to attract and keep the same audience. So let's stay above the belt, shall we :)

  20. I believe it's a matter of time. Empires don't last forever, especially on the net. Digg won't rule forever, and Mixx has the greatest potential to take over as king.

  21. I see nothing wrong with Mixx just like it is.

  22. @revital9

I agree, Mixx is doing it right. It just needs a bit more time to get the word out and build a bit more momentum. I like what's going on here, and as more people introduce others to the site they will catch on as well...best put by Pleeker as "The Snowball Effect."

  25. Sorry, although I like Muhammad as a writer and social media power user this article is pointless and obviously written by an outsider with no real insight into what makes Mixx worthwhile. Not enough traffic? Well, maybe you do not understand how Mixx works?
I just recently wrote an article that described Mixx from a Super Mixxer angle. I wonder why it didn't get 100+ votes? Does bad news sell better on Mixx?

  27. As long as it is catching on. This community is growing every day.

  28. One thing we've all got to make an effort to do in order to take that next step is to grit our teeth and troll through the 'recent' submissions weeding out spam, and attempting to identify new Mixxers who submit good content and deserve to be recognized for their contributions.

As the community grows, so will the responsibility of its members to make sure new users are given a fair shake, and that the site doesn't become too cliquish. We should continue to place more emphasis on content and less on the person doing the submitting, even when that means less exposure for our own less-than-extraordinary submissions.
