Last.fm FTW: Free Music = More Sales

64 votes

Contrary to what the labels would have you believe, it appears that free music is, in fact, good for the industry, leading to increased revenue for Last.fm's partners, like Amazon and iTunes, who are benefiting from January's launch of the site's free...

  1. Love last.fm, I myself have followed the links and purchased songs. So tis totally makes sense.

  2. I love it, too -- music and stats. What could be better? :-)

  3. I think the key thing here is that the music industry found a way to partner with online properties and created the whole digital download thing. Keep in mind that they're still $4B down in revenue from where they were circa 1999.

  4. Last FM rocks.. I haven't used it for a while, but I love it.

  5. Good service.

  6. last.fm is a great service. I agree with what they are saying as I do not know how many times I have heard a song on the net and if I really liked it I will go buy it.

  7. I've only been using it for a couple of weeks, but it's totally replaced my iPod at work. It's great to be able to hear similar artists to ones that I like, and yes, I've gone out and bought songs (albums) based on what I've heard.

One slight glitch was when my daughter wanted to hear "The Wiggles" I put that in, song 1 was Dora, then for some reason it moved into Peter Gabriel & Billy Joel...

  8. @sheseltine -- yeah, recommendation engines are not always precise. Not even Amazon, the leaders in the category. :-)
