Stigmatization of mental illness - The Dark Knight

frontierpsychiatrist.co.uk — You may think that I am being needlessly pedantic, but this has been an extremely popular film and this scene will influence many people’s perceptions of what it is to have a serious mental illness.

  1. When I saw this film and heard the line in question, I had the exact same thought... cringe...

  2. I can't help but disagree regarding the quote in question. When taken in context, the character was held in Arkham Asylum, which in the context of the Batman series, is not simply for people experiencing mental health issues. It's for CRIMINALS who experience mental health issues. They key point the main character was making was that it was EASY for The Joker to manipulate these people, NOT because of their mental illness, but because of their criminal nature.

Don't get me wrong; I'm voting the story up, because it was a good read. I'm passionate about current issues regarding mental health also, but found myself disagreeing with some of the assumptions made here.

    1. @cGt2099 I think it's a clearly expressed, valid opinion on the portrayal of mental illness in movies.

Absolutely - a valid opinion indeed. I just disagree with it when taken into the context of the story itself.

    4. @cGt2099 Greg makes a great point, the comment was appropriate within the context of the story . That being said this article seems like needless hand wringing, and reeks with the stench empty minded political correctness. I say that as someone who suffers with some considerable mental health issues.

  3. I think this author did employ excessive hand-wringing about the statement. 1) this is a movie, a piece of comic book inspired fiction at that. Most extremes are shown in comic book stories and as cGt2099 pointed out the asylum was for the criminally insane, not a "normal" insane asylum. 2) Most mental health problems including schizophrenics are not in an "asylum" let alone an asylum for the criminally insane as I would say most schizophrenics are not criminals by nature nor are people with other mental health problems such as bi-polar disorders. 3) It's a movie! Had to state that again. This was not a comment by a government official or mental health professionals.

  4. Just want to pipe in on something here again
I don't think there's a "right" or "wrong" reaction or opinion to the issue in question
It either rubs you the right way or it doesn't
It's something that people are bound to have differing opinions on
