Mystery ship washes ashore in Alabama after Hurricane Ike

3 votes

cnn.com — When the waves from Hurricane Ike receded, they left behind a mystery: a ragged shipwreck that archeologists say could be a two-masted Civil War schooner that ran aground in 1862 or another ship from 70 years later.

  2. Hmmm... something wrong about this story. The Monticello never sunk - it was decomishened in 1865 I believe. It DID, however, ram another steamer in 1864 called the Peteroff - which is what I think this find is. The Peteroff was found in 1963 and investigated in 1997, so I'm surprised the story is so far off.

    Can anyone confirm?

  3. Once again archaeologists (publish or perish mob) blow it. They can't tell the difference between a ship with a 70 year difference in age. When it was uncovered in 1969 why wasn't it excavated and conserved? Is Shea McLean just another desk jockey that believes in leaving it insitu for job security reasons? Glen Forest seems to be on the right track. Are you not afraid that looters will get to it or doesn't it have any treasure on board!!! Jack Sparrow

  4. There are mix ups. Wikipedia references the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships as saying that the ship Monticello was decommissioned July 24 1865 and sold at an auction in Boston on November 1, 1865. It later was documented as a merchant ship in July 25, 1866 and later "foundering off" in Newfoundland in April 29, 1872.

If it sank in Newfoundland it is highly unlikely it got to Alabama. I am think what the Army Corps of Engineers said. It is the Schooner Rachel.
