McCain called Obama in the Debate "That One," WTF

141 votes

huffingtonpost.com — During a discussion about energy, McCain punctuates a contrast with Obama by referring to him as "that one," while once again not looking in his opponent's direction (merely jabbing a finger across his chest)

  1. WTF indeed- you could tell how fustrated McCain was becuase he was getting his clock cleaned.

  2. McCain is a fucking idiot. Only cynical Republicans think he did great tonight.

    • (2 Kudos received)
    1. @kel According to a CBS poll, 60% of uncommitted voters thought he either did as well or beat Obama. So actually, I don't think it is accurate to say only "cynical Republicans" thought he did well.

    2. @mixx1968eric What CBS poll did you read?? Or did you pull that outta your a**!! LOL

    3. @coluonye Thanks for asking. Here is the link:

      http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/10/07/politics/horserace/entry4508356.shtml

"Forty percent of the 516 uncommitted voters surveyed identified Barack Obama as tonight's winner; 26 percent said John McCain won, while 34 percent saw the debate as a draw."

      • (0 Kudos received)
    4. @mixx1968eric using your math46% of undecideds were for Obama and 34% said it was a draw.....so that mean 80% were of the opinion that either Obama won or it was a draw!!....
Thats a better way of looking at it.

      Thanks

    5. @coluonye Keep the context in mind. I was correcting Kel with the facts. He claimed only Republicans though McCain did well, the figures indicate otherwise.

Debates over who won a presidential debate are futile and meaningless, especially these recent debates where neither candidate turned out any serious gaffes or did anything especially remarkable other than communicate their position. Both candidates did well at communicating their position.

  3. McCain is a racist pig. During the first debate, he didn't even give Obama the respect the candidate for president of the Democratic Party deserves. Even if you disagree with the man, at least freakin look at him. I mean WTF?

I'm so glad obama is ahead in the polls. That man will save this great country of ours.

    • (4 Kudos received)
    1. @Belligerent I dont see how you can call him a racist pig. Where is your proof?

      • (0 Kudos received)
    2. @mortalwind What proof is needed? Look at his behavior. He treats Obama as inferior to him. I don't see him treating other (white) candidates in the Repub debates with such derision.

But you are right. Maybe he's not a racist pig. Maybe he's just upset about getting his old ass kicked.

      • (1 Kudos received)
    3. @Belligerent I have to admit watching McCain not look at Obama brought back some bad memories. I apologize if what I am about to confess bothers anyone, but this is my experience and this is why I see McCain as a racist bastad.

One of my earliest memories as a child:
I was in public with my father and he leaned down and told me
"Do not even look at them. They are not worthy of you even acknowledging their presence."

Watching John McCain completely ignore Obama troubled me deeply for this reason.
It's straight old-school bigotry and it never went unnoticed.
In fact, it made me cringe.

    4. @CitizenX Thanks for your honesty!! This is the legacy that some of our white parents past onto us....Im not sure how old you are Citizen, but Im in my late 30s. So when you really objectively look at the issues of racism and bigotry against blacks in this country, we are BARELY just now pushing past the devastation of slavery and Jim Crow.....I mean my dad CLEARLY remembers the Jim Crow era where blacks could not vote or were not treated as equal HUMANS!!! So folks lets be clear.....RACISM and BOGTRY is alive and well in our country....it may not be as openly displayed, but beleive me it still exists in the herats and minds of a vast number of our citizenry. God bless America.

  4. McCain got his ass beat tonight, again. This was just the icing on that cake.

  5. This is the John McCain that he is trying so hard to keep under control to get elected. Obama's a "that one?" Well then I'm a "that one," too. If you aren't out there campaigning for Barack Obama, then you should be actively campaigning against McCain and a Republican party that have become so corrupt in its morals that it has ceased to represent "The People." These days, apparently it represents "the Right people," and that ain't us, America.

    • (2 Kudos received)
  6. Yes, I couldn't believe he would do that on national tv. Then again, it's just his true pretentious colors showing through again.

    And O whooped him!

    • (1 Kudos received)
  7. Remember McCain is very old, he probably forgot the name of the other "one" amidst the heated discussion.

    • (2 Kudos received)
  8. I didn't even notice the "that one" thing. I guess I assumed by "that one" he meant that senator. The thing he said I thought he'd get heat over was when he called Obama's associations involved with Freddie and Fannie "cronies."

  9. Retire oldie McCain, retire...!

    • (0 Kudos received)
  10. It was really disrespectful and belittling language. Certainly not a wise choice of words when one of the most common criticisms leveled against you is the negativity of your campaign.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  11. McCain really showed himself up tonight and his arrogance came out full force. Hopefulyl that will turn off voters who look for "the everyday person" in someone representing them.

  12. You people must be blind. Watch the video again and watch him point at Obama.

And Obama is an idiot. he doesn't even know Iraq is part of the war on terrorism.

And we're not fighting against al qaeda, We're fighting terrorism. So never again, will America be attacked by any terrorist including al qaeda.

    • (1 Kudos received)
    1. @kahrytan Iraq is NOT part of the War on Terrorism. Iraq was an invasion to take out Weapons of Mass Destruction. BTW there weren't any. Also the Bush Administration hd to play on Al Queada in Iraq. Which during the first operation called Operation Iraqi Freedom 1, Al Queada had no presence in Iraq. They started pouring in after we started building up troops. So with that being said the GOP will label terrorism anyway they see fit. So Obama was correct. You are mis-informed. And DO NOT GO DOWN THIS ROAD WITH ME. I fought in both Afghanistan AND Iraq.

      • (0 Kudos received)
    2. @kahrytan Oh yes, because he pointed at Obama that must make it okay. No need to be respectful and use his name or title; it would clearly be too elitist to do so.

We should have never gone into Iraq in the first place. The entire thing, from initial "intelligence" to thinking we'd be greeted as liberators, was a giant clusterfuck. Saddam is a terrible man, sure, but he had nothing to do with 9/11. Obama focuses on Al-Qaeda because it has been the group of central focus. Simply saying we're going to go out and fight to end Terrorismâ„¢ is asinine. That'd be like telling the american people we're going to go and try to end evil. Generalities like that get you no where.

      • (0 Kudos received)
    3. @kahrytan There were no "terrorists" in Iraq before the US invaded it. Also the US trained and equipped Iraqi forces for years to fight against Iran in the first gulf war (the Iran-Iraq war in the eighties).

Now after the US army and allies killed more than 100k Iraqis, mostly innocent civilians in Iraq the US will probably have to deal with many more real terrorists wanting revenge.

      • (0 Kudos received)
    4. @kahrytan Obama does know Iraq is where we are fighting terrorists and he's applauded the job the military is doing there.

We are not fighting against "terrorism." Terrorism is a tactic, not a "whom." When the Imperial Japanese government bombed Pearl Harbor from the air, we didn't declare war on aviation. We declared war on the Japanese. When radical totalitarian Islamists attacked us, we went to war against radical totalitarian Islamists.

    5. @kahrytan Im sorry you are so misinformed, blind and foolish.
Please vote for McCain if you're so inclined....but do not come whining when you get the results of your decision!!

  13. Look at all the spoon fed sheep in here. Wow!

    • (0 Kudos received)
    1. @deathwish808 I don't think anyone is a spoon-fed sheep. Hmmm, SilentJay fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. I think he spoon fed others!

I can understand this comment on a thread where people were talking about specific platforms or policies but this is something that was out there for all to see.

Do you think someon is lying when they say they saw and heard McCain refer to "that one"? Would you feel belittled and insulted if you were referred to that way in a professional setting? Yes.

No one is spoon-fed. If we are, then fine. I'd rather be spoonfed support for Obama than spoonfed a bunch of lies perpetrated by war criminal Cheney and dumb ass Bush about weapons of mass destruction

      • (1 Kudos received)
    2. @deathwish808 . Oh please enlighen us oh wise one!!!.....

  14. McCain was disrespectful for pointing at Obama and saying "that one" instead of "Senator Obama" voted against..... I think this man is really to old and set in his ways to lead this country out of the dark mess we're in. He needs to just accept his 25 years of a free ride in the Senate as his reward for service to the country and go home to Arizona and retire.

Also, Senator McCain is not "My Friend".....

    • (1 Kudos received)
    1. @Eagle_Eye Why do you say free ride? Isn't all this talk about McCain just a little harsh, whether you disagree with him or not? Up until a few months ago, McCain wasn't well liked by the conservative base, and he was a darling of the Democrats because he has spoken out against the Bush administration so many times, worked for legislation supported by Democrats, etc. Was Biden a liar when he said the country would be better off with McCain?

I have no problem with anyone disagreeing with McCain on policy - I've disagreed with him a lot, and I'm no fan of the guy, but it just seems silly, immature, and pointless to attack him on his age, and attempt to create a scandal out of something like him saying "that one."

I wish I could remember the context, but I could swear he was talking about voting records, who voted for what, so within the context "that one" meant "that senator."

Picking apart stuff like this makes it look like the left look desperate and as if it doesn't have anything better to go after him on.

      • (0 Kudos received)
    2. @mixx1968eric I dont know if pointing out his age is an attack. Perhaps the way its pointed out can be argued...I can see your point there. BUT his age IS a valid issue.

      • (1 Kudos received)
    3. @coluonye Oh? Interesting. As a business owner hiring someone for a position, is it ok if I take someone's age into account? No, that's against the law, but that law has very little to do with what we're talking about. The point is, people can and do perform well at his age. Picking on someone over it is irresponsible and devalues the conversation. Biden didn't consider McCain's age a problem when he said he'd be happy to run with McCain.

      • (0 Kudos received)
    4. @mixx1968eric you are right...the law prohbits age dscrimination in hiribg practices...but as you said that law has not impact on this issue....so why bring it up??!!
On a more relevant point, the Presidency of the United States of America is the for the leadership of the world....so AGE and HEALTH are important.....especially with someone like Palin as your VP.

      • (0 Kudos received)
    5. @coluonye I told you why I brought it up - what the point is. Sure it isn't illegal to vote against McCain for his age like it is illegal to discriminate in hiring, but the same principle is there.

He has had a medical examination that shows he is fit for office.

And being younger is no guarantee you'll live another four years. Obama has been a cigarette smoker - he could (god forbid) get cancer. Speaking of his cigarette habit - what does that say about his judgement and self-control?

See how the conversation starts going down the tubes once you bring it down with complaints about non-issues like age? Follow Obama's dictate - stick with the real issues, not distractions.

      :-)

    6. @Eagle_Eye I think McCain looks like he is in a rage most of the time when he is on stage with Obama - Mr. Obama is quite cool and collected - the only way McCain seems to be able to control his rage is by pacing around like a doddering old fool while Obama is talking. Insane McCain.

      • (0 Kudos received)
  15. I can't believe anyone is still trying to attack McCain and try to dash his chances of defeating Obama. Let's face it, McCain has lost. He let Obama walk all over him in those two debates. There is NO fight in the old guy. None. Hail the first Muslim President!

  16. My prediction:
There is not going to be a happy medium with Barry.
He will either be the best President we ever had
(And I count Reagan and Clinton in this group)
Or he will deceive us in ways we never imagined.

His wife Michelle is still "The Closer" for me.
I trust she has good judgment.
