  10. @SallyD don't worry...recent report claims 500,000 registered users on Mixx, but it seems much more like 200 to me...funny how that goes.

    good thing you met me, though..............................................................j/k!!!!

  15. hate to say it but Mixx suffers from the same thing and much much more than you think. Almost EVERY social media site does. This is the reason I think the voting model is not the proper one for social media.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  16. @Bdog2g2 which model would you suggest?

    • (0 Kudos received)
  17. @SallyD

    Quite a few. And "attention rank" is one possibility, that pretty much wipes out blind voters, but it does have its issues.

    A combination of vote and check if you actually clicked the link (no click, null vote).

    I don't mind propeller's model of moderators as long as they're fare and balanced, and Mixx's supermixxer as long as you keep them on a very short thread.

    A modified Stumble Upon may even be key as well. See the issue with the Social part of Social Media is that for a small percent we actually use it to legitimately meet new people. The real "Social" that goes on is that of the MySpace type, add everyone to increase your FP/Popular potential. As soon as that happens you are no long in the realm of "Let the readers decide what they want". Personally I wouldn't mind the removing the friends and follow options on a site...that way its harder to form rings.

  20. @SallyD you know, i tried an experiment with a different model with the Hall of Fame group i started, and i recruited some Mixxers to help govern it, i.e. vote on whether submissions were deserving of Hall status.

    it has pretty much failed due to the different volunteers either quitting or just not doing their jobs, and only after 5 or 6 weeks. its still going with 4 of us left, and no recent volunteers, and currently there are a bunch of articles with unfinished votes. basically it has spurtered out.

    this is due to the transient nature of social media, is my theory. that, and Mixx isn't set up with this in mind, and when someone casually goes to the Hall, due to the "algo" of Mixx, they only see a few of the stories, so they can't vote on them all (or are too lazy too) so the 2nd part of the experiment (ranking by votes) has therefore also failed. there are still things on there with 2 votes, that I know no one ever sees.

    the only way i can continue this experiment is to start a brand new site, and that's a lot of work. Mixx just is not that flexible to continue the experiment, unfortunately, but Web 3.0 ideas such as this are the future, no doubt, and someday soon most of the current sites will be swept away, probably including this one.

    but Mixx is definitely a step forward, and just maybe, it will be personalized to the extent that it will allow such groups as i tried to start to work, but it just won't right now, and therefore, i don't give it that many years.

  24. @allaboutdatiki i used to be one of yodels' 'volunteers'. the guy is a nutter. he forces you to work on his stuff 12 hours per day. it was crazy. he'd phone me in the middle of my night (i live in arkansas, mongolia, see), and ask why i haven't at least reviewed a hundred stories for his group.

    @yoda hi boss!
