Mix.com is a mixture of good and bad

gulfnews.com — Even with the worst typo in it's title, I believe this article deserves to be read meticulously. There is a clear lack of good manners of course, but the journalist pointed some relevant issues we know already. So let's just give the guy what he wants...Q

  2. hey guys, what do you think of this comment from the story: "There is often a mix of the relevant, the unusual, and a fair amount of utter rubbish."

although i agree with that one, how about this:

'Under the interest tab was "10 reasons why drinking water is good for your health". The obvious answer - because you'll die without - didn't appear in the story.

OMG!!! GUYS THEY GOT US GOOD ON THAT ONE.

thanks TG, for alerting us to this...

Mixxers, i urge you to BOYCOTT GULFNEWS IMMEDIATELY!!!

Well you know what,,, The best content I get is from my Friends... There's always some crappy stuff in the Popular Section (most of the times) and with very little votes.

    1. Mixxers aren't voting for good content
    2. Pictures and Videos are totally ignored. (They get very few votes)

  6. Scott Shuey aught to take a few spelling lessons before getting too carried away criticizing other sites.

  7. interesting and revealing article.

  9. there's no comments section. this guy is not interested in debating the subject, only in making his point known.

  10. @jasmine i ignore vids cos it chows my bandwidth, something which is very expensive in our country. so, that might be one reason why vids don't get the votes they should, or you think they should.

  11. @jasmine - lets work on it.

Thanks for the article and great comments everyone.

  12. I wouldn't be surprised if a copy editor "fixed" the spelling.

  13. Since mixx is not the first site of its kind it needs to be BETTER than all its competitors. Free press is always good regardless of the content. Articles like this are necessary to evaluate how outsider sperceive the website. Its just feedback.

  14. Obviously, this guy looked at the site for an hour. The big idea behind mixx is YourMixx. Having an article spewing garbage and not mentioning YourMixx means you did not read anything about the site.

Pure, utter garbage. And they say bloggers suck at journalism.

  15. Just please don't tell me it's "a slow news." News is always a-slow... or was he talking about the day?

Yeah, this reads like a deadline piece. I doubt it was edited at all. I thought it was interesting that the author pushes other social bookmarking sites at the bottom, but nothing for Mixx. We could pick nits and argue whether "you'll die without" is a reason why drinking water is "good for your health" or "essential to your survival." This seems like a poorly thought out rant (kind of like what I mutter to myself in my head every morning ;)

At the best, I can say that the author captured the theme of his piece (Lots of submitted articles (and the arrangement process) on Mixx is disorganized, poorly planned and not always executed to perfection) by adopting those standards to a single piece of journalism. Maybe it was satire? ;)

Anyway, I won't bemoan this any further. Social bookmarking sites will always be a little "off" since the users decide what they want to read and public interest may change from time to time (approximately every 10 minutes or so). You need look no farther than this piece to see how much value is added by letting only one of the lunatics run the asylum. ;)

Keep sending me crazy links, guys, and thank you :) If I'm not interested, I might not check it out, but I promise not to get upset about it and/or print an op-ed on any of the "major" news sites :)

    Take care,

    Mike

  16. Mixx has been in the news a lot lately - from what I've read, this is not only the worst opinion of Mixx that's been published; it's also the worst-written and most poorly-researched. I hate lazy journalism!

Hey, Scott Shuey, Chief Business Reporter, can't you be bothered to do your job well?
    What a tool.

  17. C'mon guys. Is competition. When the big guys are scared what they do? They denigrate the competition.

  21. @robdiana if the big idea behind Mixx is Your Mixx, why can't they spend a little bit of time on it? i asked Will months ago about this, and was promised it was "high on the priority list" and still it's unchanged after all the other changes.

it needs finer granularity, and i could think of other improvements.

it's still good, but it could be great. and i know enough about development to say it would take a day to improve it greatly!

come on Mixx crew, cant you give Your Mixx a little love?

  22. @yoda thx for sharing this post, F! this dude, its funny that it comes right at the heels of Mixx announcing the partnership with CNN. And obviosuly by F, I meant " forget: :)

I too think pictures and videos sections should be more visible for visitors, I don't know how, but there is certainly a way to do it. The MiXX crew is probably working on it.
I know we used to have 6 pictures in the front page, now it's only two for some reason. The picture widget is cool, but but it might the reason behind the decreasing number of votes.

Making an article that makes no sense is for sure much easier

  26. @TG
There is a way out to promote Video and Pictures section.

    1. By default - Pics, Videos & Stories should be there in 1 widget and will get more space when pics & vids widgets will be gone.

    2. Then Users should have the control what they want to see & what they'd like to remove from that widget.
(not by customizing the Page every time but by only clicking some Check Box Images or something)

    3. It will be great if Mixx crew can also do something to make videos run from the page directly and user wont have to leave the site, so that they'll be able to watch the video and vote for other content as well. I've seen a few websites which I can mention if asked.

  28. @yoda Boycotting Gulfnews won't be a problem. I don't think I've ever read anything on their site before.

I haven't been here at Mixx very long, but the reporter touched on something that irritates me about Mixx (and Digg and probably every other similar site): articles and web sites that don't have anything whatsoever to do with the categories they are added to. The other big irritant is things in YourMixx that are the Mixx version of spam -- work at home scams and the like.

  29. The title was the only okay part of the article
(If we forget about the unprofessional typo in it, that is)...

After that it's a full hatchet job against Mixx:
The so-called journalist (is he really a professional one?!)
lists the bad but can't even be bothered mentioning some of the good things...

    Journalist, my a*se ;-P
