That is the responsibility of the nurses or one particular nurse in the operating room.     The poor patient is the one who suffers for any of these mistakes, but it is not always the surgeons fault if something is left in the patient's body. That is the responsibility of the nurses or one particular nurse in the operating room. Everything is supposed to be counted and recounted, sponges, surgical instruments, anything that goes in, must come out. The surgeon is not alone in the operating room. These are horrible accidents, you have to call it an accident, because no one does it on purpose. Surely, I agree surgeons are responsible for much of the nonsense that goes on in an operating room. They will pay for these mistakes, not the nurse who was to count the items.
