The Perfect Desktop - OpenSUSE 11 (GNOME) view story

0 votes

This tutorial shows how you can set up an OpenSUSE 11 desktop that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop, i.e. that has all the software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops.

  1. Microsoft tainted SUSE pseudo-Linux should be avoided. People should use a distro that does not betray open source.

"Why Novell Teamed Up with Microsoft for a Web Hijack"

"This relationship between Novell and Microsoft is a very important one to watch because Microsoft pushes its selfish ‘agenda’ — so to speak — and forces it upon GNU/Linux as a whole via Novell. Anything that comes from Novell must therefore be accepted only with a good dose of skepticism."

"Microsoft and Novell As a Joint Venture, Now Joint Staff"

"Those two partners, which some opine might be destined to become just one, are on the face of it starting to share staff. This workforce swap is not exactly new, but it marks a progression of this special relationship."

"At this pace of increased affinity and intersection, the vision of a joined-by-the-hip Novell and Microsoft is hardly far fetched. Never say never after the Yahoo bid, so it’s only sensible to prepare for the worst and not give any power and influence to Microsoft’s “chosen one”."

"When Microsoft Shenanigans and Novell Stomp on Your Open Standards"

"Those failing to realise why Novell is on Microsoft’s side need only consider Novell’s silence amid the abuses against ISO and the rest of the industry. Red Hat posted many objections; as did Google, Oracle, FFII, FSFE, IBM and Ubuntu’s Founder, Mark Shuttleworth. Where was Novell? Well, of course, Novell quietly helps OOXML. Being Microsoft’s vassal is its competitive ‘advantage’, much like the use of Linux FUD."

“Novell/Microsoft” in the Press: When Two Become One"

"Novell and Microsoft may stubbornly insist that they are separate entities while openly describing themselves as “partners”. As we pointed out several times before, those two companies seem to be getting only nearer as time goes by"

"To put things in perspective, when Novell wins a SUSE deal, Microsoft gets paid for it."

"Novell’s Mono and Microsoft’s Plot to Use Mono/.NET to ‘Punish’ GNU/Linux"

"Thanks to a Microsoft partner called Novell, the plan to have a semi-cooked, always-behind, patent-sensitive .NET implementation for GNU/Linux is under way. As expected, it’s far from satisfactory. Unless you are Microsoft, you are a second fiddle at Microsoft lawyers’ mercy."

"The name .NET echoes some of the framework’s aspirations to become part of the Web (or Net). The ‘host’ to prey on will have a seemingly-innocent and enlightening name: Silverlight."

"Microsoft Making Millions Off Novell Linux"

"Evidence is emerging that Microsoft is making money, lots of it, from selling 'certificates' for Novell's SUSE Linux. Microsoft gained the right to distribute the certificates a little more than a year ago under a marketing and technical alliance with Novell."

"Microsoft sells the certificates at a markup to what it pays Novell for them, meaning that Microsoft itself must be netting millions of dollars in revenue from the program."

"So, while Linux -- free software that competes with Windows -- may still be a "cancer" for Microsoft, the company has found a way to profit from it. That's a good trick . . . perhaps Microsoft should next enter the pharmaceutical market?"

"Novell Starts Talking Like Microsoft, Even Where IP is Invalid"

"This new report is rather disgusting yet by no means surprising. You really have to follow the names and attributions carefully here in order to know if it’s a Novell employee or a Microsoft employee being quoted."

"Do some us a favour, Microsoft, and just buy Novell already so that at least the world knows what it’s dealing with (and then avoids Novell altogether). As time goes by, Novell and Microsoft seem as though they speak the very same language and market Linux as though it’s a mixed-source supplement to Microsoft Windows"

"If Novell’s Ballnux grows at the expense of Free GNU/Linux distributions, that will be harmful."

"Choosing Novell is not a case of escaping the Microsoft monopoly. It is, however, a case of paying Microsoft via subsidiaries, Microsoft’s ‘Linux channel partners’ at Novell"

"The Novell/Microsoft Trust and Their De facto Assault on Free Software"

"Novell has given so much to Microsoft, whose only ‘help’ to Novell has been coupons that it now calls “patent royalties”. In other words, Novell, which now sees itself as a Microsoft partner, makes Windows, Office, XAML, .NET and so many other things the ’standard’. It empowers a monoculture. It also gives Microsoft all that anti-Linux fuel it craved for and in return it gets the ‘privilege’ to collect software patent money on behalf of Microsoft"
