Silly Marketer, Mixx is for Kids

  1. I'm starting to realize that the one gripe I have with Mixx is that a lot of people are blindly voting up stories without reading them. I hope you guys pay more attention :)

  2. @tamar

Happens at every social media site, not just Mixx.

  3. @Glen

I'm with you on that Glen. The content here is much better than most other sites. There are the occasional "WTF" articles, but for the most part blind votes or not, the Popular page does manage to maintain a certain standard.

Mixx is still small. Hell when digg first came out, I'm sure it didn't even register with most sites that it linked to. It wasn't a traffic driver.

  4. whats the point of bringing mixx down? if you dont like it dont post here.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  5. @chihpih - actually has nothing to do with liking Mixx for a community or not. It just means marketers and spammers should not spend all their time hoping to get a marketing value out of it.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  6. @chihpih, Kerry and Chris know that I'm a big fan of Mixx. The point is there's no intrinsic marketing value as Burento says.

That's not to say it's a lousy social site, but for now, the traffic just isn't there for their paid efforts to convert into real awareness and traffic.

    Exactly.

  8. It will change.

  9. whoa this one is a converstaion starter. sigh. now someone will presumable post something FOR mixx again? we need to be careful of not filling up mixx with mixx vs digg articles, don't you think?

    • (0 Kudos received)
  10. and obviously the site will grow. if you kill the chicken before it lays eggs, what'll you have for breakfast?

    • (0 Kudos received)
  11. @jansie

    Nuggets?

  12. By reading the article I must say this. Social Media Sites should not be for Marketing purposes. That's just my view. So while Mixx is a great place for Social Media, the article just states it is not a place for Marketing. I would say the article is spot on. It does not bash Mixx, it just says it is not a place to use as a marketing tool.

  13. I don't really care too much about the traffic, 100 or so visitors is fine, I submit my clients articles here to get do follow links and to chop up their link profiles, I have had trackbacks on my clients sites from people who have found them via Mixx and the Mixx links themselves really count.

  14. @Bdog2g2

solly. engrish prease. why is it that people always throw weird little comments at me, and think i'll understand them? i'm stupid, for crying out loud! i need things spelt out!

  15. @jansie

    you said

". if you kill the chicken before it lays eggs, what'll you have for breakfast?"

I said nuggets, as in chicken nuggets.

  20. I too have noticed that votes far out way the unique visitors to the link in question, I think that's something that comes with social media, some people just vote up because everyone else has.

As the Mixx feature set grows, we will see traffic continue to rise.

  21. "By reading the article I must say this. Social Media Sites should not be for Marketing purposes. That's just my view."

Joe, you're right -- but the thing is, and this is something I realized (which is why I have an interest in marketing now) is that people will always try to find out how to market using social media. And why shouldn't they? If they find what the community likes, let them market it.

It doesn't work everywhere, but you can be sure that it happens, and since I love social media but I also think it's fascinating when marketers are successful through social media, it's a very powerful tool to drive people to buy whatever people are trying to sell.

(btw, I'm so going for the most contentious medal again if you haven't realized!) ;)

  22. As for blind voting, I did read this article.... and I voted it down.

  23. @FatLester

Man I admire your bluntness, as always.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  24. @tamar
I realized that. At the same time if you market correctly then it's fine. As long as people aren't spammers but decent Marketers that submit good content I am cool with that.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  25. @FatLester: That wasn't my point for this article in particular. :)

@joefowler3: I agree. If it's spam, get lost. If it's clever stuff, go for it. Think about Kina Grannis and her song. Did she capture the eyes of a bunch of horny guys for a chance at a record label? Yeah, she marketed herself, and it worked! (I still am a disbeliever, though.)

  26. Bah - Mixx isn't for marketers anyway

  27. @cGt2099
For real man. Mixx is not for marketing. I get enough junk mail in my mailbox, I don't come to Mixx to buy into someone's crap. I want to read about the 2008 Election, war news, current events, random crap, funny pics and videos and discuss important topics with people that care about what's going on. If I wanted to buy crap I would go to ebay, I don't come to Mixx for that.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  28. @HotFuzz 99% of 2008 elections, war news, current events, random crap, funny pics and videos are marketing materials.. they are trying to get you vote, eyeballs, money, opinions, or participation.

@cGt2099 So clear and correct is that statement i may have to quote you on it. :)

@mixx I really do wish this site the best success and will pop in an interesting story from time to time to do my part to help it grow. It will just be as a user and not as a marketer.

    Cheers

    • (0 Kudos received)
  29. i guess the fact that so many people voted for this story goes to show that people would vote for anything :)

    • (0 Kudos received)
  30. @chihpih - I don't necessarily think so, but you may be right in some instances. I submitted it to get the eyeballs of the community, and that definitely happened. ;)

@Hotfuzz - I used to say the same thing. *Everything* is marketing. See the front page of many social news sites today? Look what dominates it. MacBook Air, iPhone 1.1.3 update, whatever... THAT is marketing.

I have no problem with people using marketing as long as it's cool and the people like it. If they're just going to throw up a "buy my product page," screw it. If they're selling dog collars and take photos of the fattest and ugliest dogs on the planet, and they do the research and put it on a page with a lot of funny commentary, they did a great job getting some people's attention and that hard work and research should be congratulated. After all, they did it to entertain us with the hope that it also promotes themselves.

  31. Isint the point to post storys that are relevant, whats more relevant to MIXX users then a critique of MIXX, and it really wasnt negative. Though I beleive that blind voting should be avoided at all cost even though Im sure we are all guilty of it. And Im sure we all have noticed that the sure fire way to make the front page is to post a article about MIXX or DIGG.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  32. @burento Just because someone may be trying to get you to vote on their submission doesn't mean they are trying to sell me something I don't want or care about. Everybody is posting submissions to share with others, if its something I like I will vote it up because its due for a good submission. That is what the democratic system here is all about.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  33. @tamar First of all, I do not appreciate the patronizing comment. Second of all, I did not nor have I ever said "Everything" is marketing. I think my previous comment stated my position quite clearly. When you look at some of the people that submit here you will see that every one of their submission are the same topic or from the same source url. That is what I don't like. I don't come here for SEO submissions just like I don't go to my mail box for junk mail.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  34. @Hotfuzz - I'm so sorry but I never intended to patronize you. I'm just saying that this is the nature of the beast. I (not you) am simply pointing out that everything (okay, fine, nearly everything) is marketing. That's the simple point that I'm trying to make. I'm sorry you construed that as "patronizing" but that was hardly my intent.

And I agree with you about the submissions from the same URL. That's self-promotion and personally I think it's crap. If you're going to succeed in social networks, you need to be varied in your submissions.

As for submitting on the same topic, some people only have a few interests. Personally, I am hoping I'm not one of them. I also avoid some users because they consistently submit stuff that I don't like or are too narrow-minded.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  35. Just rereading my comment - and that also didn't come across right. There are just some topics that I don't like. Those are the people I don't vote up (nor down). That's not to say they're narrow-minded, but their submissions are consistently on topics that I have no interest in.

I think most people would agree that it's better to have a wide range of interests on these kinds of sites than to be focused on one thing.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  36. @tamar
I understand. I didn't mean to take your comment the wrong way, no hard feelings. This is just one of those push-button issues for me. I really just hate spam whether it be on mixx, digg, my email or mail box. I find it to be quite a bottom-feeding way to promote a product. I think that social media is being abused by these people and it is very annoying.

    • (0 Kudos received)
  37. @Hotfuzz No doubt. I think that the right marketing message works though. If you think about it, there are a ton of successful campaigns there that people actually like, even if it's an ad for something. There are clever marketers out there and there are spammers. Both are different beasts. I wouldn't even put them in the same category.

I hate spam mail. I hate messages that are unsolicited. I don't have a taste for bacn (solicited email that I don't always want to read) either. But sometimes I'll find this amazing article, or a great video, or an awesome picture, and I'll stop in my footsteps and be like .... whoa, that's amazing.

That's the kind of thing I don't mind. In fact, I would rather see something interesting like that than the same boring stuff (that's not even marketing at all) everyday.

  38. I will have to say that the quality of visitors (focus) is higher on coming from mixx versus some of the other social news and bookmarking websites. Mixx may send fewer referrals, however the folks that visit from Mixx seem more interested in the content.
