  15. About the environment discussion, Danielle's right on with her assertion that people need to have an emotional connection to the environment in order to care. People from my grandmother's generation were raised going camping and playing outside as kids. These days, from the time you're born you're inside watching TV and f*ck whatever goes on outside. I care because I was raised going to the beach and going camping and all that. I love nature. (Just not mosquitoes. We don't really need those, right?)

The thing that bothers me the most is the politicization of environmental issues. For some reason, caring about the environment is a "liberal thing." It gives some people an excuse to dismiss environmental issues as political agendas, but we're ALL going to die if there's no breathable air in the atmosphere, not just one group or another. People fighting for the environment are fighting for everyone, not just themselves (like those fighting for their right to drill oil, pollute our country and make tons of $$.)

I think you're right about it being considered a liberal thing. But if I may go slightly off track a little....
Here's how the dictionary defines Liberal:

    1. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
    2. (often initial capital letter) noting or pertaining to a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform.
    3. of, pertaining to, based on, or advocating liberalism.
    4. favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.
    5. favoring or permitting freedom of action, esp. with respect to matters of personal belief or expression: a liberal policy toward dissident artists and writers.
    6. of or pertaining to representational forms of government rather than aristocracies and monarchies.
    7. free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant: a liberal attitude toward foreigners.
    8. open-minded or tolerant, esp. free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc.
    9. characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts: a liberal donor.
    10. given freely or abundantly; generous: a liberal donation.
    11. not strict or rigorous; free; not literal: a liberal interpretation of a rule.
    12. of, pertaining to, or based on the liberal arts.
    13. of, pertaining to, or befitting a freeman.

Why has the word Liberal, which means open-minded or tolerant, free from prejudice or bigotry, begun to be viewed with such negative connotations in the land of the free and the brave? Its July 4th....seemed relevant.

Anyway.....hope our American cousins have a good one. Hopefully it won't be your last - and that's coming from an Englishman. Its ok though, we've started to forgive you for what you did to our tea. It still hurts sometimes and we're not over it yet, it was after all lovely tea......but we're getting there.

    N.B.
Cool SB Show by the way guys.

  17. @Albionshores Uh oh, a debate with albionshores? You win! Lol.

I think in America the words "liberal" and "conservative" are viewed more culturally that literally. Some people MUST be part of a cultural feud in order to feel like they have a purpose in life, hence the extremists in America. Liberals tend to think of conservatives as bigots against civil rights, and conservatives tend to think of liberals as Godless freaks who have no morals. Oh comma well.

About the tea, I'm sorry man. If it makes you feel any better, we now have an evil George who's worse than the one we were rebelling against.

Oh I'm absolutely certain that you're right, that it is viewed culturally as opposed to literally. Only the culture in question is simplified down to the point of dumbification. I don't even know if that's a word. It should be. It sums up the whole idea of this cultural feud, of name calling one an other: 'Libtards' and 'Republicons'.

Republicans consider themselves loyal to the old values; it doesn't get much older for America than the founding fathers and if you look at the constitution in context that was incredibly liberal. One calling the other is to literally call one's own grass roots. Lockean philosophy was key to the constitution. Locke was a capitalist that promoted liberal rights.

Somewhere along the line people stopped agreeing on common goals and disagreeing how they should be achieved. Instead they started agreeing that they would argue and disagreeing on the common goals. That conservation should be passed off as a 'liberal thing' (and I think you're right, it is seen that way) is just to dismiss an issue because one gang claimed dibs on it because it was a new concept.

I guess I'm saying that I can't believe that people are so determined to put things into two groups, polarising to the point of not addressing anything at all other than calling the other group names. Like you said politicising an environmental issue. Even the terms liberal and US conservatism have been put through the splicer. There should be no space between - someone who supports the liberal initiative set up by the constitution. Instead people are told they are polar opposites and issues like environmentalism suffer.

►"About the tea, I'm sorry man. If it makes you feel any better, we now have an evil George who's worse than the one we were rebelling against."

WOoOah there!!! This isn't a ritual thing with you guys is it - like Greeks breaking plates? Is it something y'all do before you throw a revolution; "Right, we're having a revolution! Somebody throw the tea in the harbour and we'll get started."

You're gonna do it again aren't yer!
