  2. i love this guy. he's so honest and real.

i agree with everything he said. we are idiots as a country if we don't start planning long-term for the future and doing what we can within our own borders to become more independent. geez..freakin' environmentalist crap.

  3. Lets face it, offshore drilling will increase gas prices. They will produce more oil and speculate on it and the price will be even higher..lol!

That's the current strategy, just like the war we are in. Keep the wars going to make even more money and do it in the name of freedom....lol!

This reporter is about as dumb as a box of rocks on a hot day. he doesn't want us to buy plasma screens, cars clothing or food. This reporter wants you to spend all your money on gas. If it were up to him we would all just sit in the house with nothing but a tank of gas to get to work after every paycheck.

  4. Although I often agree with Mr. Beck, I find his usual sound reasoning out the window with regard to this situation. For me the only thing I get out of our current energy dilemma is our need to address it now in a way that truly does makes long-term sense, i.e., lets look for clean alternatives to fossil fuels NOW instead of putting it off for another 20 or 30 years - ala the projected insolvency of Social Security. I think it is well past the time that we as a nation confront our decades of rampant consumerism and sense of entitlement. I don't see this as a matter of WHERE we get our oil, but as a matter of WHY are we continuing to get oil. If it will take 10 years to start getting any return from lining our entire coastline with oil rigs what could that same investment in alternatives bring us in 10 years. As to how much oil might be available off our continental shelf, who really knows? How long would it take to extract all of this - 50 years, 100 years - all the while spewing more carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. Also, what about the millions of acres currently leased to the oil companies to which they have done nothing. When it comes to commodities it isn't in the best interests of the producers to actually provide more than enough of a product when keeping supplies tight adds to their bottom line. Hey, at least global warming is quickly getting rid of those silly polar ice caps so we can have even more places to drill! If Mr. Beck could be around in another 50 or 100 years maybe he could stand on the Atlantic coastline of Tennessee, basking in the average Summer temps of 120 - 130 degrees and congratulate himself on his forsight in and encouragement of America's mission to produce more of its own oil. As to those people who have lived close to or beyond their means prior to this drastic run up in the price of oil - maybe they can cry on the shoulders of those that bought houses they couldn't afford, though I suspect the overlap of these two groups is considerable. Along with instant gratification we seem to always be looking for ways to put off dealing with tough issues instead of confronting them.

  5. I don't know why the US is so resistant to offshore drilling. It has been happening in the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Canada for years. In fact one of Exxon's most valuable assets is the Hibernia field 150 miles of the Coast of Newfoundland. Exxon initally calculated that the break even price to pay for the operation was approximately 14 - 20 dollars per barrel. You can imagine what they are making now at $140+ per barrel. If you look at Canada there are three offshore drilling operations happening right now and Chevron is about to anounce the fourth called Hebron. With respect to environmental issues this drilling is occuring in waters frequented by icebergs, where 80 ft waves are relatively common in the middle of the planet's most producutive fishing zone. Guess what, no issues.

  6. A new TV Mr. Beck? Wow. I disagree with your article, and the values it suggests you hold.

If you are interested in planning for the next ten years, move closer to work. Plant a garden in your backyard. Stop buying $1,000 televisions, and reduce the time you spend watching the one you currently have.

The majority of American's know deep down that this is a crucial time to practice good stewardship. Over 50 years ago, dedicated Americans rationed during the war. Many of them made personal sacrifices for the national cause: they minded what they purchased at the supermarket, they watched what they threw away, and if something broke, they thought to fix it before seeking to buy it new. There was a collective concsiousness nationwide that understood the value of our individual actions, in fact a pride regarding those actions, and how they affected the whole.

Where is your pride Mr. Beck? I hope it's not in television, or electronics made in China, or careless consumer spending. You have a position of power Mr. Beck, a voice broadcasted to many people on this site. Please, in the future, use your power to influence action towards real long-term solutions (spending/using less), not short sided ones (spending/using more). Thank you.

  7. Glenn just doesn't get it....again. He's the kind of guy that people buy into and believe because he sounds confident, is direct, repeats it over and over, and states what he believes and sticks to it. Unfortunately, what he believes is just wrong and straight up B.S. Just think, if big US auto separated themselves from big Oil, they'd be the ones selling out of hybrids and keeping jobs here instead of watching toyota and honda rake in the cash.

We're just going to be in the same spot in 20-30 years, assuming that proposed offshore drilling even cuts the price. But you all know what happens when you assume. $4-5/gal gas sucks, but it's forcing people, businesses, etc to evolve and adapt to a changing market that will make our economy more stable over time so that EVERYONE benefits long term. Offshore drilling is a short term fix that really only helps the rich get richer. Plus, if the supply of oil goes up, so will the demand and so will the price.

  8. Some of you people are all so narrow minded and ignorant just like the politicians. The whole focus is on gas for cars and how we need to cut back on driving, drive smaller cars, switch to hybrids. That's all we need to do. BLAH..blah....blah... We don't need to drill for more oil locally.

Hey... even if we could all go out and magically get a 100% electric or hydrogen powered car tomorrow WE STILL NEED THE OIL !
Where do you think the tires on that car come from? How about all the vinyl and plastic parts in that car? The carpeting in that car? They are brought to us from the magic of CHEMISTRY and OIL people!

Look around your house. Where do all the plastic containers for your milk, juice, condiments, shampoo, soap and fabric softeners, the fibers in your carpet, the vinyl siding on your house, the water bottles, the materials in the shoes you are wearing, the materials in the computor you are using to write your dumb comments. I could go on and on.. Where do you think all the plastic and rubber for those items come from? Duh.....OIL

So next time Obama and the rest of you idiots want to state we don't need to drill here I got news for you. Your life is highly dependent on OIL regardless of whether you decide to walk to work for the rest of your life.

  9. And what makes Glenn Beck or anybody else think that if the oil companies drill for more oil off the U.S. coast, that oil will stay in the U.S. and lower prices here? NONSENSE! The big oil companies are international, global corporations that have no loyalty to any country, no loyalty to anyone but their CEO's and boards of directors, and occasionally a little to their stockholders. They will put that oil on the international market anyplace they please for the best price they can get. That's exactly what they are doing right now with the oil that they pump. That oil would not be owned by Americans, but by the big global corporations. And those corporations are not looking for a chance to do you any favors!
The long term answer is to maximize our use of solar, wind, and other renewable, sustainable sources of energy in order to minimize the amount of oil we have to use. Sure, we'll always need some oil, but that can be reduced drastically with the proper ingenuity, planning, and commitment.
The simple and simple-minded clamor for more drilling is not the answer.

  10. The comments previously expressed by the collective of idiots (excepting voodoodaddy, halzeo, and Topbrains) is the reason why our frail democracy is degenerating into an idiocracy which will more than likely elect Backarama as president this coming November. Oh! how ARE the mighty fallen!! Such verve! Such rancor! Yet, the political machine continues to blind and de-enlighten the collective soul of this nation. How can "WE THE PEOPLE" seriously believe that we can continue to survive as a nation when so many people look the other way and do not realize the fate which is staring them in the face?

I hate four-dollar gasoline as much as the next guy, but c'mon, we're too dependent on foreign oil to see past next year and too many people have the business sense of a potato to even truly analyze the situation. This has been seen coming since Carter's presidency and, unfortunately, the government (The executive and legislative branches respectively) have done nothing to encourage the "big three" automakers to increase the MPG rating of cars. Foreign cars are kicking their collective derrieres with cars like the Nissan Sentra and the Honda Civic.

I agree with alternative fuels, solar energy, and wind energy, but I find a lot of the promises made by companies pushing the "green" thing may be full of it ,as well as, smelling of methane too. A lot of that technology is fairly new and the return on investment may take even more than ten years to properly become mainstream. There's a scientist promising an "allspark" within 35 years! Try investing on that and speculating!

For now, the near future brings oil into our homes, our play areas, our fuels (whichever they may be), and the majority of our daily life will keep revolving around oil unless some "skeptical chymist" comes along and invents some awesome material made of Einsteinum and Molybdenum and some other funky mineral that will help stem such a high dependence on that "black gold" available for all areas of society, not just fuel.

Until then, let's focus on reducing our dependence on foreign oil and, if drilling new wells and creating new refineries at home is the closest we can get to an answer, then let's look at it with positiveness and hope for the best. America needs positive thinking and only Americans, "WE THE PEOPLE", can do it and solve it.
