  1. >>Last Saturday millions of children just out of nappies were forced to confront
the sudden loss of one of their favourite people in the world. They watched a girl
who loved him wholeheartedly break down as she witnessed his demise, while
a woman whom they've come to regard as a friend had to cope with being parted
from her young son, with little chance of ever seeing him again. As kids' shows go,
    Doctor Who is no picnic.

Having spent this week wondering if the Doctor will ever look the same again - and
which of his companions, if we've been reading it right, is going to die - gearing up for
our kids' reaction to tomorrow' nights finale (a 65-minute special) requires mental parental
strength. If my past experience is anything to go by, we could be talking proper psychological
trauma, torrential tears, and at least an hour's worth of talking it through before bedtime is possible. <<

  2. Hm. I've been watching DW literally all my life. One of my earliest memories is of my dad waking me up to come and watch it. DW has taught me that things are not always linear (continuity is overrated), change is good, be adaptable, act like you know what you're doing even if you really don't, things can always be a little more sonic, jelly babies are a fantastic icebreaker, evil comes in many forms but always has a goatee, and life is tough-get over it.
Fanwank is fun sometimes, but you know what? 10th Doctor-he's changed before and he will do again. My kids were screaming in surprise with me at the end of last ep, and it wasn't because Rose was bawling again. :) (Love you Rose) I am so excited for whichever way they take this next episode. *Many many kisses to RTD*

  3. It's great to see Doctor Who receiving so much attention! They do seem to be emphasizing the darker side in the new series. But people often forget that there was a frequent undercurrent of melancholy in the old series as well. For example, "The Pyramids of Mars" or "Logopolis" are quite dark episodes.

  4. Not to spoil anything, but David Tennant has already signed on to do several specials, so its doubtful that we'll get a new Doctor tomorrow night (or at least one that lasts for long).
Even knowing that though, I was still sitting on the edge of my seat at the end of last weeks installment.
Its been great to see the 'new who' getting such a positive reaction (minus a few episodes) this time around and makes a fantastic change, as the article eludes to, from the sickly sweet crap that Disney and friends constantly dish out like the manky leftovers from an unfinished meal that should best have been thrown out long ago.
Kids CAN cope with the emotions that a show like Who elicits, and they are all the stronger for them.
